Introduction to East Anglian Farmers Golfing Society
The East Anglian Farmers Golfing Society (EAFGS) was formed with a view to providing a Society for farmers across East Anglia to meet and play golf on courses throughout the region.
The Society was formed in 1959 by Trevor Richardson (member and captain at Purdis Heath) and Flanders “Flynn” Morton (member at Ryston Park and Hunstanton). It was quite possibly as a result of a conversation they had whilst celebrating the marriage of Trevor’s daughter and Flynn’s son, Peter, in that year.
They were both golfers with direct farming links in Norfolk, Suffolk, and Cambridgeshire. Trevor was a regional manager with Shell and lived in Rushmere, Ipswich and Flynn farmed in Little Ouse, Littleport, Ely.
Their wish was to connect those in the farming community through sport.
Trevor Richardson, who was the Society’s first Captain, also became the Society's President in the same year and remained its President for 13 years. Flynn Morton took over the Presidency in 1972.
The family connections continued with Peter Morton, Flynn’s son, serving as President of the Society between 1997 and 1999. Into the next century the family ties continued with Flynn’s nephew, Tony Rains, serving as President between 2006 and 2008. Tony was a farmer from Downham Market.
To this day, it is predominantly farming based providing fixtures to coincide with the quieter agricultural months and bringing like-minded people and friends together to play some of the great courses East Anglia has to offer.
In 2002, the Society introduced an annual tour in May, visiting many parts of the U.K. and Europe.
During the playing year, we have five fixtures – three open fixtures along with a match against the Suffolk Captains and a match against The Surveyors.
Details of the following year's matches are sent out in December each year.
The Annual Subscription is £5.00 and is payable by Standing Order on the first of March.
